Here is a plant I found growing with Utricularia simulans, wich is very similar to it. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
Utricularia sandwithii is a plant wich seem to be new for Fr.Guyana by the discovery of this station. |
The identity of the plant have been confirmed by Dr.Andreas Fleischmann. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
The species was cited in Hoff & Cremer's list from 2004, but without any data |
about it's localisation, nore if it's really present in _French_ Guyana. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
Many ancient botanical studies have been made in the Guyana area, |
and the presence of some plants have to be confirmed first, regarding our country. |
For this species it is the case now. |

The plant is very similar to U.simulans. The 2 species grow together at the same place of the biotope, |
but the first to flourish is U.simulans ; U.sandwithii will follow 3 to 4 weeks later. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
The plants present in Fr.Guyana look pretty different from the typical plants : |
The type plants have a reddish inflorescence, red sepals and yellow petals. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
U.simulans have green stalks, and yellow corollas. |
The form of U.sandwithii from Fr.Guyana have a green stalk, and yellow corollas. |
This is certainly the reason why it's presence seem to have never been confirmed. |

The station is situated in a savana, wich is covered with tall and thick grasses at this place of the biotope. |
The situation of this particuliar biotope is also special : |
it is not innoundated, and if it is, only a small layer of water will cover the ground for a short period. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
This plant will flourish only after weeks of sunny weather, when the ground is rather dry, |
near to the end of the rainy season. The plants have to push themselves 30cm out of the grasses |
before it is granted to develop the flowers : |

<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
The fact is that these plants begin their live as very small beings : |
curiously, they begin to build the flowers at the same time as they grow ! |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
Once they grow enough, they build their flowers. |
This picture illustrate this : the plants are present at two stages, in full bloom and in full growth : |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
Of course, some plants will build their flowers before all the others... |
But this depends also from the conditions : if they are more rude, the plants will be smaller : |

This plant is a jewel : |

The morphology of the plants present in Fr.Guyana must be examinated more precisely, |
as there are evidences for these plants to be a subspecies of U.sandwithii |
or a natural hybrid between U.sandwithii & U.simulans - pers.comment from A.Fleishmann. |
<<<<<< ESPACE - GRIS FONCE >>>>>> |
If the plants are hybrids, both parents should be present somewhere in the area ; |
if not, then the hybrid is fertile. But the plant is most certainly only a local variation of the species. |
